Artist Statement
For years, there has been one overwhelming urge in my life that has pushed me, a voice that has commanded one directive: create beauty. Whether this effort was enacted in preparing a curated research presentation, renovating a house, writing a book, or through swirling paints on a canvas, this one centered goal has grounded my actions and aspirations.
Of course, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but as a painter of stories, I believe there is nothing more beautiful than human emotion and an ode to the past; these two themes comprise the core subjects of my work.
I am an anti-perfectionist. I never use a level on the wall when hanging photos. I eyeball measurements when baking cookies. And yet, the job always manages to find its way towards completion. It's the same with my work. This is why I love art: there are no rules. You will often find me mixing acrylic, oil, gauche and other mediums on my canvas or page because in art, anything goes. To me, if the end result is beautiful, the objective has been accomplished, and the imperfection of the journey is irrelevant.
When a person views my work, I hope they feel emotion-- I hope they feel captured by the directive to create beauty, in whatever small manner this may manifest. I hope they learn to spot the crevices of whimsy in the dismal stories, in the saddened streets. I hope they yearn to restore.
